Macau eyes Middle East flight links, 50 pacts inked

Macau has already signed service agreements with 50 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Israel, Turkey and Qatar, laying the legal groundwork for future aviation links with these five Middle Eastern nations.

The latest update comes from the Civil Aviation Authority, in a recent written reply to lawmaker Lam Lon Wai.

The authority told the legislator that there had been talks with their counterpart in Saudi Arabia to set up a bilateral pact over regular passenger flights between the two regions – within the year.

For now, Macau primarily serves as a transit hub of cargo services for Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways.

The authority also revealed that the city’s airport operator was carrying out ‘incentive programmes’ to woo foreign carriers to expand the city’s route network.

Under an express service in Macau that is tailored to flights bound for Southeast and Northeast Asia, air passengers are allowed to transit via other major hubs such as Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo, and Taipei.

The initiative aims to ensure a direct baggage transfer seamlessly.

For instance, Macau-based carriers are now sharing codes with Beijing, enabling smooth transfers to Frankfurt and vice versa.

‘The use of this route has steadily been rising and is gradually becoming a viable option for Macau-Europe travel,’ the authority said in the reply.
