Air Macau cancelled 155 flights amid soaring fuel costs
By Newsdesk
Air Macau has announced the cancellation of 155 round-trip flights scheduled for May and June, citing unsustainable operating costs driven by surging global oil prices, TDM Radio reported
The move affects popular routes to Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta, among others.
Passengers had already reported widespread disruptions in recent weeks, with several regular services abruptly halted.
The airline confirmed the scale of the cancellations in a statement to the chinese language TDM Radio stressing that the international price of aviation fuel has climbed to US$205 dollars (MOP1,656) per barrel — a level it says has made many routes financially unviable.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Macau said it is closely monitoring the impact of oil price volatility on the city’s aviation sector, with the regulator pledging to continue pressing carriers to handle passenger refunds and ticket changes responsibly as the industry grapples with mounting cost pressures.
The recent war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran has triggered one of the most serious energy crises in recent decades, with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupting global oil and gas supplies.
In mainland China, airlines such as Xiamen Airlines, China United Airlines, Spring Airlines, and China Southern Airlines have applied fuel surcharges, while in Japan, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) are expected to double them on international flights in June and July.
According to the International Air Transport Association, fuel accounts for up to 30% of airlines’ operating costs, so significant fluctuations in international oil prices affect them substantially.
